What is Makaton?

Makaton is a unique language programme combining signs, symbols and speech. It’s becoming an increasingly popular tool for teaching babies and young children to communicate.

WE are working towards becoming a
Makaton Friendly setting

Communication is one of the most important skills we need in life and learning Makaton from an early age can help babies and young children to thrive.

By promoting communication, enhancing language and vocabulary, improving cognitive development, encouraging social interaction and supporting inclusion, the use of Makaton in the Early Years can ease frustration and promote a sense of independence.

From the youngest of our babies right through to our school leavers, teaching Makaton is done in a fun, interactive and engaging way. From signing a simple ‘please’ or ‘thank you’, to singing and signing songs as a collective group, Makaton is already a big part of our daily practice at The Barn..

Our Makaton Champions
supporting our team to embed Makaton across our Settings

We are passionate about improving the communication skills of all children in our care.

At The Barn, we have many level 1 Makaton qualified Practitioners,  3 of whom actively champion the use of Makaton across the nursery.

As champions their  goal is to provide staff, parents, families and carers with the support they need to enable them to use Makaton effectively as an additional form of communication.
